Heavy Metal Smoothie
This is my favorite smoothie and my go to as part of my ABCs ...Always be Cleaning philosophy. Which essentially means that I eat foods to detoxify my body on a daily basis. This particular smoothie focuses on the removal of heavy metals.
"There are 35 metals that are of concern for us because of residential or occupational exposure, out of which 23 are heavy metals: antimony, arsenic, bismuth, cadmium, cerium, chromium, cobalt, copper, gallium, gold, iron, lead, manganese, mercury, nickel, platinum, silver, tellurium, thallium, tin, uranium, vanadium, and zinc (Mosby et al. 1996). These heavy metals are commonly found in the environment and diet. In small amounts they are required for maintaining good health but in larger amounts they can become toxic or dangerous. Heavy metal toxicity can lower energy levels and damage the functioning of the brain, lungs, kidney, liver, blood composition and other important organs. Long-term exposure can lead to gradually progressing physical, muscular, and neurological degenerative processes that imitate diseases such as multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease and muscular dystrophy. Repeated long-term exposure of some metals and their compounds may even cause cancer (Jarup, 2003)." (Jaishankar 2014)
"Chelation therapy, simply defined, is the process by which a molecule encircles and binds to the metal and removes it from tissue. Chelating agents are what is needed in order to detox the body of these heavy metals. These agents create a chemical bond with heavy metals in the body and makes them less active." ( Ravichandran 2011)
Below are some foods that natural chelator:
- wild blueberries
- lemon water
- barley grass juice powder
- Atlantic dulse
- green tea
- apple cider vinegar
In this smoothie the key ingredient is cilantro. When I mention this as an ingredient I don't usually get a great response. Especially for those who taste buds makes cilantro taste like soap. But I created a combination that can be quite delightful. It is one of the main smoothies I include for my detox program. Try it out and tell me how you feel after a few rounds.
Heavy Metal Smoothie
- 1 Bunch of Cilantro
- 1.5 cups of Mango
- 1-2 bananas
- 1 tbs of fresh ginger
- 2 tbs of fresh mint
- 2-3 dates (optional)
- 1.5 cups coconut water
Directions: Place in blender. Blend until smooth.
