This juncture is not only about the changing seasons; it's a celebration of the harvest. It beckons us to turn inward, to reflect, and to give thanks for the abundant yield that emerges from the dedicated work of planting and reaping.
Below you will find some rituals to help you celebrate the Fall Equinox.
Gratitude Brings Abundance: In the fall, we reap the harvest of our hard work planting, watering, and fertilizing over the spring and summer months. Harvest comes from the Old English word for autumn, Haerfest, and means to reap, gather and store what has been grown. Just as we can harvest our crops, we can harvest the goals we established, worked on, and manifested in the year.
Take some time to look back on what you were able to achieve and overcome throughout the year. If you have a gratitude jar, this is a great time to read the many things you were grateful for. In a journal, write down the things and people you are appreciative of. Don't just focus on your biggest wins; include the things you take for granted. Share what you wrote down with someone and encourage them to do the same.

They say, “the eyes are the window to your soul” and there may be some truth to that. When I began my holistic journey I learned that you can read the iris and sclera to access what is going on with one's physical health. In my holistic training I learned how to read the sclera. It was amazing what I could see through the whites of your eyes. I was always fascinated with iridology and I finally had an opportunity to have my iris read by an iridologist. Iridology is the science of the study of the iris of the eye. It is used as an assessment tool. The irises reveal the genetic predispositions of the entire body.
Your eyes are your blueprint; no two irises are exactly alike – just like fingerprints. By looking at the fiber structure, color, markings, and pigmentations, we are able to discover your inherited strengths and weaknesses. These predispositions allow us to recognize acquired conditions, determine root causes and potentially correct them.
I had my exam with MyEyeRead with Jessica Halpern is our Certified Advanced Physical Iridologist and Holistic Health Coach with over 20 years of experience. A lot of things were confirmed and possibilities were revealed. You can view a video recap of my experience below. I also sat down and interviewed Jessica so we could get a better understanding of iridology and how it may be helpful to your life.

Nzingah :
Hi Jessica, It was exciting to have my eyes read, and I'm excited about doing this interview with you because I know people will have a lot of questions and I thought it'd be really good to have this interview with you. So, my first question is, what is iridology?
Jessica:
Well, it's science and art. I like to call it the art of reading the eyes, analyzing the eyes . So through the eyes we can see inherent individual predispositions as well as aspects of personality, because 80% of physical issues are usually emotional. The color, and the pattern of your eyes is a reflection of your unique genetic inheritance from about three generations back. We can see things before they come to fruition, and that's the best part of it because we can work on prevention. So I don't know if you know, but the eyes and the are one of the most complex besides the brain structures in the human body.
Nzingah :
Really.
Jessica:
So with the eye, there's a reflex connection to every organ and tissue in the body, by way of the nervous system. So through the optic nerves, they're attached to the eye from visual information sent to the brain. And at the same time, information coming back to the eyes from the brain about the state of all the organs and tissues in your body comes up through the spinal cord, the nervous system.
Nzingah :
Got it.
Jessica:
So we can see everything going on. It really is pretty cool how all the nerves are connected. So it's kind of like your, your brain is the computer in a way, computer program, and your eyes are your monitor. I'm not very tech savvy, but I think that's how it works.
Nzingah :
So how did iridology come into fruition? How was it birthed? What's its origin story?
Jessica:
Okay. Well, actually it stays back as far as ancient Babylon, and I don't know the exact date, but, and so the story goes that there was this doctor in Hungary, He had found an owl that was on the ground, and the owl had a broken leg. He saw a mark in the eye of the owl. There was a black line. Then he nursed the owl back to health and took care of this owl until he was better. He then noticed that that black line wasn't there anymore. Now this is kind of really folklore, but that's the story that most people know. Okay. But there was an ophthalmologist 1813, and he wrote a book called Textbook of Eye Disease. He wrote that everything that affects the organism of an individual, this is a quote, cannot remain without effect on the eye and vice versa. Then iridology in America was brought here by Bernard Jensen. I don't know the exact date, but it was in the 20th century, I think. He is known as the father of American iridology.
Nzingah :
Okay.
Jessica:
However we do things, we learned differently now. So like what he brought, it was a wonderful beginning, and he was wonderful bringing everything, but now we've learned so much more. So now we know that the eyes don't really change their structure. What you were born with is what you were born with, unless there's, God forbid, an accident and you have something happen to your eyes, you may acquire more pigment, but your structure is as individual as your fingerprint, actually even more accurate. And no two eyes are the same, not even in one person.
Nzingah :
How and why did you become an iridologist?
Jessica:
Well, I had my own health issues for many years. I was on a journey to get myself better when the doctors weren't helping me. I decided I had to take things into my own hands. I had tried everything. I was at a farmer's market one day and somebody overheard me speaking with a friend and recommended an iridologist to me and an herbalist. At the time, I had never heard of that before. And I was like, wow, that sounds pretty, pretty cool. You know, I might as well, what do I got to lose? So I made an appointment and he looked in my eyes, took photos, and some things were accurate and some not so much. But I did learn. I just was so fascinated by it. I realized you could see pretty much your genetics in your eye, what you have inherited. So , it was just mind blowing, you know? I just couldn't get enough of it after I started doing my own healing. I said, “I wanna learn more.” I wanted to know more. I couldn't get enough. And so that's what happened. I took many courses because each one is different. I knew I wanted to know everything. We can't possibly know everything, but I certainly wanted to know as much as I can so I can help people in the best way possible.
Nzingah :
Got it. So can you speak on what an iridologist sees through the iris versus the sclera?
Jessica:
Okay, so the iris is your genetic blueprint. So like I said, it goes back three generations. When I look at the iris I look at the color, structure, and what we call the diaphysis, the diaphysis can be acquired or inherent depends. Some are acquired, some are inherent, but I usually know which is which. Through those things, I can basically see the overall view of the health of the person and what possibly can come or not. It's all in our own hands. So we have the ability to turn on or turn off whatever it is. The sclera on the other hand is what we call dynamic. So the sclera is one of the most reactive parts of the eye. It can change, it can get brightened up. So there are some markings that are more transient and they can go away, the lighter ones. But then there were some that became constitutional. They've been there for a while, so like a heavy marking in the sclera, it may lighten up, but most likely won't disappear completely. However, the sclera gives me a more accurate picture of what's going on in the present.
Or what is coming. So there will be a marking, maybe that will be showing me where to look. The sclera will give me indication sometimes where I should look in the iris as well.
Nzingah :
Got it. And I know you spoke during our session about the difference between the right and left side. Could you explain that a bit more too?
Jessica:
Yeah, sure. So usually this is an 80 20 rule. So 80% of what I see in the left iris usually comes from your mother's side. And the right iris is 80%, usually from the father's side. I mean, there's always that little 20%, you know, that can be from the opposite, but 80%, mostly what you see in the left eye you're seeing from the mother's side.
Nzingah :
Okay, when should someone get an exam or when is it recommended for them to get an exam? Is there a frequency that it should happen?
Jessica:
An initial exam, anytime. I think it's never too soon. I mean, listen, if you start out as a child, that's amazing because then you know the diet that you're inherently meant to be on. And we can prevent anything from ever happening in the future. There's never a time, specific time like you should go now. You know, why wait till something happens. Prevention is key.
Nzingah :
Got it. So typically, is there a follow up that needs to happen with this exam?
Jessica:
Okay. Yes. So let's say if I, if I put you on a protocol or something, then I'd like to follow up usually with, depending on how long is the protocol I put you on. But I'd like to check in within about four to six weeks. To have your eyes re done, you don't have to do that, that the eyes are not gonna change for acquiring more pigment, however, the sclera will. Okay. So with sclera, we can check more often, but I say usually around maybe six months to reshoot the eyes, you know, read photos.
Nzingah :
Is there anything special that someone needs to do before coming to an exam?
Jessica:
No, nothing special at all. Just take out your contact lenses. I can't read properly with contact lenses yet.
Nzingah :
When you discover something in someone's eye, how do you proceed? Do you give a protocol, what happens?
Jessica:
Yes Usually I do.. Let's say you have a lacuna in the heart area. So just because I see that does not mean that you have the issue, you know, it's a genetics and it was passed down to you. So it's kind of like your achilles heel. So, you know, it's like if you go off balance from what you're meant to do, that would be your weak point. So you can develop something in those areas. But I like to think of them as gifts that were passed down to us to heal for the next generation to come. Let's say you have a child and you had this marking in your eye and you do all the right things and you take care of yourself and you get well then it doesn't have to be passed down. So your daughter or son may not have that marking in their iris because you already fixed that problem. But like I said, 80% of physical issues usually begin with an emotion. So sometimes they'll be assigned and there won't always be a physical meaning to it. It could be an emotion that was there as well.
Nzingah :
Can you talk about that a little bit more?
Jessica:
Oh yeah. That's a whole other story. So let's say I do see a marking in the heart area. Sometimes it can be due to heartache or a broken heart. So like if you know, older people when they lose a spouse, they can't go on and you can die of a broken heart. It's been proven. So sometimes you can even carry the emotions from previous generations. Let's say your great grandma was left at the altar and carried that emotion with her and it could have been passed down. And if it hadn't been healed, it can show up in your mom's eye, your grandma's eye or your eye.
Nzingah :
Got it.
Jessica:
Oh. So we have, we've been given these gifts to heal for future generations and for yourself as well.
Nzingah :
Is this exam something that you can do in person or online?
Jessica:
Yes you can do both. When it's virtual somebody will make an appointment and they'll send me the photos. I have to see whether or not they're good enough to read. Because if I can't see what I need to see, I can't tell them what's going on. So the photos will be sent and I'll look at them and then if they're good, I say, okay, we make the appointment and then I go over it with them on the phone.
Nzingah :
Is there anything else you would like people to know who might be new to this practice and they want to find out more?
Jessica:
It's a wonderful thing really because we can use it as an assessment tool to determine potential health problems before they happen. It gives us an opportunity to prevent illness and maintain optimum wellness for our life. It's just a fabulous thing to do.

Oil swishing
Also known oil pulling is an ancient Ayurvedic practice that involves swishing oil in your mouth for 20 minutes. Coconut, sesame, and sunflower oil are typically used. It is a great way to detox your body.
In the first part of the morning take one tablespoon of a chosen oil. Swish the oil in your mouth for 20 minutes. Afterward, spit the contents of your mouth and brush as usual.

Tongue Scraping
Tongue scraping is another Ayurvedic practice that involves using a device to scrape the tongue. Studies suggest that tongue scraping can remove bacteria and improve bad breath more than brushing. You would scrape after brushing your teeth and flossing using gentle strokes. You want to do about 7-14 strokes rinsing off in between strokes if there is too much accumulation.

]]>Welcome to the first day of 100 days of self-care. When most of us speak of self-care we only speak of it from a general standpoint. This can make it difficult to pinpoint where exactly we have gaps in our needs. For the first seven days of this challenge we will unpack the seven domains of wellness what each area is and ways you can practice self-care within each domain. Following the first week we will have weeks where we have discussions and suggested activities around a specific domain. Here is a list of the seven domains and what they mean.

Around the age of 11, I remember a classmate telling me I was "big-boned" & I would never be the same size as everyone else. I felt condemned. At the time, I weighed 156 lbs, wore a size 21 in children, suffered from hay fever, & chronic constipation. My pediatrician had just informed my mother I was on pre-hypertensive. Because I was overweight, my mother had to have clothes made for me or ordered my clothes from JC Penny catalog because it was hard to get anything in my size. I hated the class weigh-in day because I was always in the Top 5 in terms of weight & my classmates would remind me every day.
Here is an example of my daily scenario at school:
Me: I turn around to go into my book bag.
Bullies: Yell "Biscuit" or "Chicken" then fall into laughter
Me: Mental thought, "Can I please disappear right now."
Bullies: "She turned around because she is always hungry. Look at her!"
My family did not help in these matters. I was always reminded of how big I was especially in comparison to my mother. What is interesting a few years prior to that my mother thought I was too tiny. So she asked my grandmother to send for a syrup from Haiti that would boost my appetite so I would gain weight. It was sent & I definitely gained weight.
After being told by my pediatrician that I was pre-hypertensive and I needed to address my weight I set out to make some personal changes-Yes, I was that kid. It seemed like a simple undertaking but, things got a bit more complicated. During that visit, I had my first period. What are the chances? It was celebrated by family and it involved me taking on more responsibility because I was now considered a young adult. After my first period, my cycle became irregular. My mother was concerned and pressured my pediatrician to pursue it more and I was diagnosed with a pituitary tumor (prolactinoma) which lead to me being diagnosed with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). About a year later, I was also diagnosed with a rare autoimmune disorder called scleroderma. I was a research doctor's dream, & my worst nightmare.
A lot of medication.
A lot of doctors and doctor's visit.
A lot of tests.
A lot of I don't know and I'm sorry.
That was supposed to be for the rest of my life.
In some traditional cultures, they say healers are confronted with illness to propel their journey as a healer. Twenty one years ago, I was definitely on that journey; I was pre-med because I wanted to heal my mother and myself. However, something clicked & decided to take alternative practices more seriously. After some investigation, I realized I needed a lifestyle overhaul. I changed my LIFESTYLE: became planted-based, switched to non-toxic products, started therapy, committed to a yoga practice, and detoxed on a regular basis.
The rewards were many. I am here 21 years later a lot healthier, a lot wiser, with so many tools, techniques, & lessons under my built.

Welcome to week 6 (Day 36-42).This week we are going to dive deep emotionally through journaling. There is so much that is below the surface that we need to unpack. There are things we need to heal from. We also need to take time to honor and give ourselves credit. Everyday you will be given a journal prompt to help you sift through how you feel and all create a self-care model that makes sense for you. So create a vibe. Bring out your incense, light a candle, make a mocktail, and play so music in the background and let’s dig deep.
Day 1: Support: Many of us feel as if the weight of the world is on us. This is often coupled with feeling unsupported. Our lack of support may be due to the poor relationships we have but it may also be related to our inability to ask for help. Let’s explore this through the following question:
How do you ask for help or support when you need it? Do you feel hesitant to ask for support? If so why? What type of support do you need in this present moment..
Day 2: Boundaries: Boundaries can be complex. In some aspects our boundaries are concrete while in others they are inadequate or completely absent. When it comes to creating balance, boundaries are important. Let’s explore boundaries through the following question:
How do you set and protect your boundaries? What areas of your life do you feel you need to improve your boundaries? What boundaries are you content with? Are you uncomfortable with setting boundaries? What boundaries do you have for yourself? What boundaries do you have for your friends, family, and associates?
Day 3: Self Discovery: There are moments in our lives that we do not recognize ourselves. There was the person we imagined ourselves to be when we were children. Then there is the person that our family and society has told us to be. We often find ourselves leaning towards the latter. Which can be either a good or bad thing. The question is are you happy. More importantly, are you following your dreams? The following questions are you to rediscover the things you were passionate about:
When you were a child what did you want to be when you grew up? When you were a child, what did you love to do? What do you really love to do that brings you joy? What do you feel is your unique gift? Are you using it? (If yes how? If no what stops you). What would you do if you couldn’t fail?
Day 4: Let it go: In some aspect of our lives we are challenged with letting go, either emotionally or physically. Emotionally a key aspect towards releasing is forgiveness. Forgiving ourselves or someone who we felt slighted by. Take some time to reflect on what has hurt you. Honestly examine if you feel that you are in a better place about each event. In your journal explore the things that you feel you still need to heal from. Why does it still hurt? How can you truly heal from it? Create a list of things you need to release on a seperate paper. Then burn it. Afterwards write down a list of things you would like to invite in your life.
Day 5: Dreamer: Imagine yourself a year from now. As the best version of yourself. Living your best life. What does it look like? What does it feel like? Who is in your life? Write a journal entry recalling the day and the year leading up to it. Dated xx/xx/21.
Day 6: TimeTravel: Write a letter to your 12 year old self? What would you tell them? Think about how you felt about yourself at that time. What advice did you need that you would give yourself?
Day 7:Love: Write down all the things your love about yourself. How do you practice self-love, self-care, and self-kindness?
Week 5
Welcome to week 5 of 100 days of self-care. This week we are going to focus on our intellectual wellness, by reading. The goal is to set aside 30 minutes each day to read a book. Reading has tons of benefits including
Below are genres for each day both in fiction and nonfiction.
Day 1: Self-help We are on this self-care journey because we want to become the best version of ourselves. Self-help books can provide us with the roadmap and framework to do so.
Day 2: Cookbook: So many of us are guilty of having a collection of cookbooks that we haven't really dived into. Take some time to go through a cookbook and create a meal plan for the week with recipes from the book.
Day 3: Poetry: Poetry books are a lovely way for you to reflect and see what you have felt or are urrently feeling in a written form.
Day 4: Children's Book Tap into your inner child and little adult go. Revisit our childhood favorites or explore the plethora of children's books on the market.
Day 5: Comic Book So many of the movies and series that are being made are adaptations of the comic books many of us loved as a child. Take some time to discover the amazing worlds brought to us by comic books.
Day 6: Spiritual Book: There are so many books that allow us to connect to spirituality be it the Bible, Koran, or Bhagavad Gita. Explore what you are familiar with or read something new. Every book has something of value.
Day 7: Health: There is so much when it comes to our health. We are often challenged due to a lack of knowledge. Take some time to read a book that will help you own your health more.

“Your vibe attracts your tribe” -Unknown
This week we are going to detox our life. We accumulate a lot of stuff spiritually, mentally, and physically that weighs us down. This week we are going to look at different aspects of life that could use a little bit of cleaning.
This week you will be asked to explore your creativity a bit more. For many adults, creativity is something we feel guilty to explore. Adulting for some of us means no more learning just because. No more creative fun. There is no time for anything. This week we toss that notion to the side.
Do you have a book you should write about?
A business that you wanted to launch?
Have you wanted to learn how to draw?
Have you wanted to learn how to play an instrument?
Do you want to learn how to crochet?
Play a certain sport?
Well with this beautiful instrument called the world wide web everything is possible. Go online, do a search to find the pathway to your desire or to find an instructor. There are tons of lessons on platforms like Youtube, Teachable, and more. Share so we can encourage each other.
Day 15
Create Affirmation Cards
Take some time to make affirmation cards with the affirmations below. Pull out your crayons, colored pencils, markers, or paint. Get creative. Do not focus on perfection but how you want to feel when you look at the card.
Day 16
Dance
Put your favorite song on repeat or pull up your favorite playlist and move. Create your own choreography. Set your timer for 15 minutes or more and let go.
Day 17
Sing
Sound healing is trending and we may feel it requires a singing bowl. But don't forget your first instrument your voice. If you don't believe in the healing power of the song think how you are moved by songs found in a spiritual setting.
Sing "This little light of mine" As you sing the song think about your internal light. What things light your fire. What things dim your light. When you sing the section that refers to what you will not dim your light replace the words with those things.
Lyrics
This little light of mine
I'm gonna let it shine
This little light of mine
I'm gonna let it shine
This little light of mine
I'm gonna let it shine
Let it shine
Let it shine
Let it shine
Won't let ( insert things that dim your light)
I'm gonna let it shine
Won't let ( insert things that dim your light)
I'm gonna let it shine
Won't let ( insert things that dim your light)
I'm gonna let it shine
This little light of mine
I'm gonna let it shine
This little light of mine
I'm gonna let it shine
This little light of mine
I'm gonna let it shine
Let it shine
Let it shine
Let it shine
If you have some favorite songs follow with those songs as well.
Day 18
Create a Poem
Mysterious Places. For these poetry writing prompts, we’re going to ask you to stretch your imaginations beyond the world of logic and fact and imagine that you can inhabit “in-between” spaces. What would it feel like? What would you do? Or not do?
Imagine you are…
Between stars
Between particles
Between dreams
Between flames in a fireplace
Between light and shadow
Underground
Behind a mask
Between air and water
Just before waking
Just before sleeping
Between notes in a song
Between the couch cushions
Between breaths
Between tripping and catching yourself

Day 19
Doodle, draw, or paint.
Drawing and painting can allow you to move away from the monotony of the day. It can be freeing to the mind. Take some time out of the day to doodle, draw, or paint.
Day 20
Take a photo walk
Photo walks are not focused on capturing a great picture. It allows us to move our bodies, engage with the world, clear our head and embrace the unexpected. Keep the following questions in mind: “What is beautiful or interesting that I haven’t noticed before?”
Day 21
Imagine
Imagine what your life will be like in 5 years. Think about what you hope to accomplish, your dreams and goals. What would it feel like? Who is in your life? What does it taste and smell like? What a journal entry dated 5 years from today. Write as if it has already happened? Save this letter either by placing it in an envelope or scanning so that you open it up 5 years from now.

Dated xx/xx/22.

From Superhero to Whole Human:
In the world that we exist in we try to model ourselves as superheroes. Taking on the impossible and creating miracles (hopefully). The tragedy of this superhero model is that when attributes assigned to normal humans start to present themselves it is considered a sign of weakness. With that being the case, we work hard to remove ourselves from those attributes. Until our day of reckoning arrives where we are forced to confront our humanity. Unfortunately, this is almost never a sweet aha moment. It comes more in a breakdown such as losing a job or contract, the termination of a relationship, and more often a mental collapse. The truth is as we try to be the living epitome of a superhero we live way beyond our capacity physically, spiritually, and mentally. There is no time to check-in, mentally or emotionally. If we do, because we have played hero for so long, the people around us are unable to support it. If anything they question our sanity. If we examine it a bit deeper this society conditions us too. So we exist externally in grandeur while nursing our emotional, mental, or spiritual void. We want to be whole but are unsure what the feels, smells, taste, sounds like.
Take the S off your Chest campaign challenges us to remove our super hero's cap and root ourselves in being whole. It asks for us to nurture ourselves in the ways that we need so we can live healthy lives and have healthy relationships with our family, friends, and the environment. We honor that it is in our vulnerable moments that we truly find our strength.
WE FEEL.
We hurt.
We cry.
We fear.
We doubt.
We fail.
We are humans.
Flawed and beautiful at the same time.
Taking the S off our chest so we can connect with our heart.
Our challenge starts on February 1, 2022.
For the 1st day:
Join our Facebook and Whatsapp group. Introduce yourself.
Write a letter or record a video to yourself where you discuss why you need to commit to this challenge. We will revisit this on Day 100.
Welcome to week 5 of 100 Days of Self-care this week we will focus on rest. Rest is something we take for granted. It plays a critical role in our physical and mental health. Without the right amount of sleep, we begin to see impairments in our immune system which creates a domino effect in other parts of the body. Many of us are dealing with inadequate rest or sleep deprivation which in turn impairs our decision making and increases stress hormones in the body.
This week we will explore different techniques on the path to quality rest. Our goal is to develop our nighttime routine, so every day you will be given something new to try.
We are excited to have Organic India as this week's sponsor. All participants will receive their Tulsi Sleep blend. Click here to add it to your cart and Use code “TULSISLEEP” for a free box of tea (you are only responsible for tax and shipping). In addition, participants will be eligible for Organic India's special giveaway. Three winners will be chosen to receive the following: a Tulsi mala, Tulsi Sleep supplements, tumbler, and sari pouch.
100 Days of Self-care Rest Giveaway
(The giveaway runs August 31-September 7, 2020 11:59 E.S.T)
To enter the giveaway do the following:
Assess: Don’t change anything about your nightly routine. Just take note of your habits. What do you do right before you go to bed? How long do you sleep? How do you feel when you wake up? Do you wake up with an alarm or naturally? Where do you fall asleep? What time of day do you fall asleep? Do you have dreams? Can you recall your dreams? What is working for you? What can you improve? Write down your response in your journal. Post some of what you have uncovered in our group or as a post for the contest.
Schedule: “Proper planning and preparation prevents poor performance.” Stephen Keague
In order to get a good night's rest, we need to establish a routine. It is recommended that you prepare for bed between 30-60 minutes before the time you actually want to fall asleep. We want to get between 7-9 hours of sleep. Based on that time frame take into account what time you want to wake and now you have the time you want to start winding down.
Tonight you will:
Sip: In order to sleep many of us consume aids, some of which can be harmful to our bodies. Here are some teas, and recipes you can take an hour or two before you go to bed that will allow you to unwind and find deep sleep.
Decompress: Do you find it difficult to go to sleep because your mind is racing? Do you find yourself trying to solve events in your day in your dreams? Journaling can be a great way to download unresolved activities or thoughts before going to bed. Use one or more of these prompts as part of your nightly routine.
Set the mood: How can you turn your bedroom into an oasis for rest. What is the current mood or energy of your bedroom? Your bedroom is a place for sleep, sex, and prayer. Which is why eliminating technology from the room is so critical. One of the ways that you can curate a restful space is through aromatherapy. Studies have found that aromatherapy may be a safe alternative to pharmaceutical interventions for mild sleep disturbances. Essential oils are extracted from plants in a way that retains their original properties. When you use essential oils, you gain maximum benefits of the plant because of its active botanical constituents. Below are the differnt ways you apply essential oils to your bedtime routine and the specific oils that promote rest.
Ways to Use Essential Oils
Essential Oils
Love Down: Now it's time to love yourself down with ayurvedic self-massage better known as Abhyanga. This ayurvedic practice of oil massage improves circulation, increases vitality and longevity, energizes the system, lubricates the skin, and most importantly calms the mind. If you suffer from insomnia it is a great way to help you fall asleep. If you have limited time and you suffer from insomnia focus on massaging your feet.
Instructions: Warm the oil you will use by placing the amount you intend to use in a small glass container that you will place in a bowl of hot water. The warm oil should be massaged in the direction towards the heart. Start at the extremities and work towards the core. Use an oil that corresponds with your dosha. Take the dosha quiz and purchase the appropriate oil on Shankara. Use coupon code "raw beauty" for 15% off your purchase. This can be done in the morning or at night.
Contraindication: for women during menses.
Reflect: Repeat three or more of the activities from the week.Reflect on how your routine has changed. Were you able to maintain the routine. Did you perform better during the day? What was the most difficult part about changing your sleep routine? What were you surprised by? Do you think this is something you can maintain moving forward?
(If you are just getting started here the prompts for Week 1. Please note that you do not have to follow the prompts In the order that they are given. The prompts are a guide to help us with your self-care Journey during these 100 days.)

While many of us may associate “travel” with the traditional physical travel, “travel” is a broad term that may not necessarily entail moving from where you currently are.
With travel bans in place and a pandemic going on right now, we cannot physically travel to destinations and we won’t be able to for quite some time. However, we can travel “virtually” and technology can help us do that. Through “virtual travel” we can explore places we may not have imagined to be able to go to, and it is also very eco-friendly and sustainable.
Here are 5 ways you can travel virtually and without leaving your home:
Reading and educating yourself on foreign countries
Reading is like traveling with your mind and you can really transport yourself to a place and time as you flip through the pages of a well-written book. You can learn fun facts about the world and other countries, as well as lesser-known facts that you may be wondering about. For example, if you are wondering ‘what is the longest bridge in the world?’ or ‘where are the happiest people on Earth?’ you can read non-fiction books or books set in particular places where you can learn about physical and human geography.
Google Earth or Street View
Google Earth is a tool you can use to explore side streets and lesser-known parts of destinations you’d like to visit. It gives you a real snapshot of what a place is like, with usual movements and the environment you would see in real life. Plus, it is an easy tool to use so you can see many sites in a short amount of time.
Explore a virtual museum
If you have always wanted to visit a museum but haven’t had the opportunity to travel to its site, a virtual tour is a way you can really leverage technology for a unique cultural experience. Make a day of it, reading up on what you want to see and how you want to approach the tour and diving into more information on pieces that interest you.
UNESCO World Heritage Sites or virtual Park Tours
You can still see and experience UNESCO World Heritage Sites and National Parks via virtual tours. Especially during these times when we are spending a lot of time at home, even just the visual tool of a beautiful site in nature can be powerful. This is also a way that you can determine whether a physical trip to the site would be worth your time and money later!
Tours or “explore with me” videos on YouTube
The Internet is full of video tours and ‘explore with me’ videos on YouTube. You can even “travel” to Mars without leaving your home by following NASA tours or videos. Type in the destination or place you’d like to see and you might be surprised with all the virtual offerings that there are.
Technology is an incredible tool, and especially during these times when many of us are unable to leave our homes, it is a tool that we should take advantage of.
These days in quarantine are difficult to deal with for many of us and they can also have negative repercussions on our physical and mental health. Whilst being isolated from the world, and in some cases also from our family, it is important to take care of ourselves daily! There are a few ways you can maintain your health and feel good during the home quarantine.
Get Moving
Not being able to go out is not a good excuse for not moving. Even at home you can continue to workout! For this purpose, a very helpful tool you can use are apps such as the 30 Day Fitness Challenge app, a sort of digital trainer that will help you keep fit with tutorials, workouts and useful tips. Apps give you the opportunity to choose your fitness program, customized according to the you have and the results you want to achieve at your fingertips. Remember that exercise isn’t just for losing weight, it is also a powerful mental health tool proven to help depression and anxiety!
Find A New Path
It is important to follow a routine even if you do not have to work. Wake up at a reasonable hour, get dressed and prepared even if you don't have to go out. Organize your time and build a new daily life. Let’ say in the morning, you may get into home office mode, study or clean and tidy the house, while in the afternoon you can dedicate yourself to recreational activities or take care of yourself and your loved ones (watch a movie or TV series, read, cook, workout, call family members, etc.). Remember, that this period of quarantine gives you a precious opportunity: to rediscover your passions. Take a course in something brand-new, such as painting, art history online or learning a new language.
Skincare R&R
You can also take advantage of these particular days to take care of your skin like never before. With no makeup and not walking around the smoggy city, your skin can finally breathe! Spend some of your time applying some good masks and trying to better your skin. Our tip? Just before going to sleep is the ideal time to dedicate your time to the beauty routine! Go on with your cleansing milk, tonic, oil, moisturizing cream, eye area and lip balm!
Cleanliness is Key
There are many long days to spend at home ahead of us. For this reason, it’s of fundamental importance to keep your home clean and tidy. Studies have shown that if your home is cleaner, it will allow you to feel better mentally, more productive, and less stressed. Try also to diffuse a few drops of essential oil in distilled water for a calming effect, like, lavender to help you to sleep.
Chef Up
One of the best (and most satisfying) activities to do is definitely cooking! Learn to prepare new dishes that are good for your body and also for your mind, preferring the consumption of fruit and vegetables and not forgetting to drink water throughout the day. Go online and search how to make your favorite dish from your favorite restaurant you have been craving, and recreate it at home!
With these tips, living isolation may be easier for you. This moment in our history and the quarantine is difficult for everyone, but we also hope that in part it will also be a moment of discovery and personal enhancement!

In the midst of this current pandemic, there is a lot of uncertainty, fear, and misinformation. One thing that we can all agree upon is our immune systems should get as much support as possible. We often think of individuals with compromised immune systems like the elderly or persons with acute illness but diseases like diabetes, heart disease, and obesity leave many of us across all age groups vulnerable. Here are 5 simple ways you can support your immune system.
1.Rest: The role of adequate rest in the prevention of illness is highly disregarded in the generation of "Team no Sleep" but studies have shown that just one night of inadequate rest can have dire consequences that often cannot be compensated for. Try to get 7-8 hours of sleep a night. It allows your body to reset & your immune system to function properly. If you have challenges with insomnia consider drinking teas like chamomile, valerian root, or holy basil (tulsi). Here is a bedtime yoga routine that you can add to your bedtime rituals.

]]>1. Spring Cleaning
Most of us have heard or possibly witnessed our family and friends practice spring cleaning. It is time that you declutter and do a deep cleanse of their homes. Springtime is about starting anew. Removing clutter from your space is a great way to reset the energy. You know that space in some corner that has a bag or pile that you were meaning to get to. Take some time to go through your home, clear those spaces, throw away what you do not need or give away what can be saved but you are no longer using.
2. Plant New Seeds: Set Intentions
Take the time to write down what you want to manifest in this forthcoming season. The law of attraction in its simplest understanding states, "Like attracts LIke " by focusing on what you desire and not past failures you will see a major shift in how things manifest in your life.
After you write the list down, read what you wrote down and imagine it coming into fruition. How does it make you feel? What does it smell and taste like? If it, negative thoughts should arrive counter it with the following statement: Everything, I desire is possible I just have to believe.
Make a copy of your intentions. When you have a chance, plant a seed or seedling along with your intentions. As you nurture the plant imagine yourself nurturing your intentions. As the plant grows and potentially so will your intentions.
3. 108 Sun Salutations or Japas Meditation
To mark the change in seasons we flow through 108 sun salutations. 108 is a significant number in several spiritual systems. In this case, by performing the same movements over and over again you can enter a meditative state.
If 108 Sun Salutations feels like a daunting task choose a number that resonates with you. You can also do a japas meditation instead. Japas meditation is where you repeat a mantra a 108 times. It is often paired with malas, a meditation necklace that has 108 beads. Repeat the following mantra 108 times.
“I’m in constant bloom. I am refreshed, rejuvenated and reborn.”
4. Purify Your Space
There are several ways to cleanse your space. As mentioned before, decluttering your space is a way you can shift the energy but it may not be enough to remove negative energy. Smudging with sage is very popular but it is not always accessible or sustainable practice. Sage is becoming an endangered species because the practice has become more mainstream. Below are several ways you can purify the energy in your space without the use of sage.
5. Detox
Springtime is a great time to do a cleansing fast. Our bodies begin to respond to the changing season by releasing foreign matter or toxins and mucus. After eating heavy foods during the winter a cleanse will lighten our systems. Below are guidelines for Spring Equinox Fast. The fast can be eaten in either solid or liquid form.
Time Frame: 3 to 10 days
8:00 a.m to 12 noon: Kiwis, oranges, limes, grapefruit, lemons, apples, applesauce (unsweetened), apple juice, pure water, and herbal teas.
12 noon to 8:00 p.m. Asparagus, beets, broccoli, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, dandelion leaves, garlic, leafy greens, olive oil, parsley, parsnips, potatoes with skins, sprouts pure water, and herbal teas.
The foods above can be taken in solid or liquid form. The vegetables can be raw, steamed, baked, or roasted. Combine raw and cooked foods to each meal to supply live enzymes for proper digestion.

It's my anniversary! This month marks 18 years since I started my holistic lifestyle journey. What a whirlwind! I started with the intention of wanting to heal the symptoms from my pituitary tumor, scleroderma, and polycystic ovary syndrome. I never imagined it would turn into Yes Baby I Like It Raw. I have learned quite a bit over the years. Here are a few of the ones that stand out:
1. Your body knows how to heal almost all the ailments we are confronted with. We just need to get out of its way.
2. There is no fountain of youth; approaches to healing are not universal. The variability in our DNA, lifestyle, and environment not only affect our health but should be considered when giving prescriptions or protocol. What works for one person can not be applied to everyone else. Healing methods should be customized to the individual.
3. Too much of anything can be bad for you. Balance and diversity are key.
4. Stress is at the core of so many of our physical, and mental ailments. You can eat well and be physically fit but if you are not properly managing your stress illness is inevitable.
5. Food is your first medicine.
What things have you learned?
When I was a child I wanted to have a period really bad. My peers were starting to get theirs and I have to admit I had period envy. I felt like I was missing out on something and was feeling like a late bloomer. I was curious about it all and just wanted to experience it for myself. So much so when some companies mailed pad and tampon samples I stashed them away for myself. (covers face) I remember trying them out so I could see what it felt like. No period in site but I wore a paid for a day and we don't even know how to unpack my trying a tampon as a period less virgin. Let's just say desert conditions made it very uncomfortable.
My period finally arrived the summer before I went to middle school. I remember my stomach being itchy while we opened the Sabbath. I never experienced that before. The next day I went to my pediatrician for my middle school check-up. It was one of those rare Saturday's that my mother did not go to church because Saturday was the only day we could make it to see Dr. Go. I provided her with my urine sample and when she looked at it she asked me if I was on my period. I said no. She asked me to go back to the bathroom and check. Low and behold the day had arrived. I think my ancestors worked it out up until that point all I knew about my period came out of my research. I checked out several books from the library to learn about my body and puberty because I was not allowed in Sex Ed and the extent of the conversation around sex and my body was, " Boys will get you pregnant and leave you." My pediatrician explained what was going on and what to expect.
When my mother and I arrived home our sabbath lunch turned into a period celebration. She called Haiti to tell everyone and told everyone who came to lunch. Insert me being super embarrassed. It was followed by everyone sharing different rituals to do for the first menstrual cycle. It was a whirlwind for my mother and I. This one woman told my mother to give me a cup of lemon juice to make sure it was a "real" period. So, of course, my mother proceeded to make me a cup of lemon juice what she failed to clarify was it should have been mixed with water. It knocked my period out for a day.
My grandmother led us in a ritual where we gave my first blood to a spirit that was affiliated with menstrual cycles. I thanked the spirit for my period and had to throw my pad on the roof. This lead to a lot of paranoia. Being raised in a Christian household i didn't use to rituals. I was worried about the pad falling off the roof or being found. My paranoia got worse when our roof had to be fixed. I can't explain the thoughts running in my 11-year-old head.
A year later I learned periods were not going to be cut and dry for me. My period although painless was super irregular. It skipped a one month came another then it was gone for six months. I would later find out it was due to a pituitary tumor. To have regular periods I had to be placed on medication. At one point I could schedule when it would arrive.
During this time I discovered I had a diva for a vagina. Thick pads were our enemy and we became an Always and Tampax fan. (I hid my use of tampons because my mother believed virgins shouldn't be able to use them.)
In 2001 I had a lifestyle overhaul in part to find a solution to my irregular periods that did not involve a prescription. It did not start too well. I went cold turkey and stopped taking birth control. Birth control was one of the ways I was able to have a monthly cycle. When I stopped, however, I bled for a month. I went to my gynecologist and told him of my intention. He told me that because I had been on birth control for so long my body was essentially addicted to and I could not just stop taking. I went back on birth control to stop the bleeding then saw a naturopath. He placed me on a plan to wean me off of the birth control and regulate my period. Below I will share some of the herbs that have helped.
Evening Primrose Oil
Chasteberry (Vitex)
Nettle
Yarrow
Red Clover
Ginger
Red Raspberry Leaf
Maca
When I became vegan my period became shorter instead of it being 7-10 days it went down to 6-7. When I changed what I used during my period it also led to a reduction of days, it went to 5-6. I discovered what I was using was full of chemicals that could be impacting my womb health and extending the number of days I bled. I started using organic unbleached chemical-free pads and tampons. I later switched to a menstrual cup and now use Thinx period under. Check out my blog post about menstrual underwear. I am Thinx leader and if you go to my link you can save $10 off your purchase.
Most recently I started to rest on my period. This means no yoga, no exercise maybe light walking. When I made that change my period went down to 3 days. My journey with my period has been full of highs and lows. I'm grateful for her arrival every month because I fought hard to have her. What's your journey been like?

Honestly eating healthy is not as expensive as we think. In 2013 Harvard published a study in the British Medical Journal showed that the healthiest diet only cost $1.50 more a day then the unhealthiest. For a year, $1.50/day more for eating a healthy diet would increase food costs for one person by about $550 per year. When I read the amount I thought that difference was nothing, however for families living on a tight budget or the poverty line that can be significant. But, when you think about the cost of diet-related chronic disease $1.50 is nothing.
I had an opportunity to speak at Purse Empowerment's Summer Savings Brunch, a few years, the topic was, "How to Buy Healthy and Organic Foods on Budget." Thought it would be great to create a blog post to share some of the tips I use and share with my clients. Here are 12 tips to help you stay on track in your Healthy Eating goals.
Below is my podcast on healthy eating tips to reclaim your kitchen. Check it out! Let me know what ways you eat healthy on a budget.
CBD is definitely all the rave right now and with laws changing there is much more arriving on the market with respect to hemp and its medicinal properties. I have to be honest and say I have been hesitant to touch much of anything related to it because of a lack of information and even personal bias. I have done a bit more research recently as well as tried a few new products by a company called Foria. I was interested in Foria's offering because they have a line of products focused on women's wellness.
The reality is this, as women we have both positive and negative experiences when it comes to our womb. For some of us, our monthly cycle can be unpleasant. Many women experience debilitating pain and much more. Around 80% of women experience period pain at some stage in their lifetime. With respect to sex for a variety of reasons, pleasure can feel elusive or unattainable with or without a partner. Only 25 percent of women are consistently orgasmic during vaginal intercourse. This statistic comes from a comprehensive analysis of 33 studies over the past 80 years by Elisabeth Lloyd in her book The Case of the Female Orgasm (Harvard University Press). What's worse, we suffer in silence. My personal mission is to create a space to have more conversations about these topics and help women find solutions. Foria has spent time creating products that help women address some of these challenges.
For the past few weeks, I have been using a few products from Foria, this includes their Basics Tonic, suppositories, and an arousal oil. Below I will tell you about the specific products and my personal experience.
Basics Tonic
This daily CBD tonic serves like an adaptogen and helps to regulate balance in nearly every system of the body — affecting appetite, sleep, mood, immunity, and inflammation. In terms of ingredients, it is a very pure it only has two ingredients Organic MCT Coconut oil and
Broad-Spectrum CBD-Rich Hemp Extract. You should take it daily orally or add it to your smoothies and tea. They recommend taking it sublingually and swishing around for maximum absorption.
I personally prefer to take add it to my daily smoothie or my ayurvedic night milk which helps me sleep. It is a blend of almond milk, cardamom, and nutmeg. After taking the CBD tonic I noticed that the quality of my sleep improved tremendously.
Basics Suppositories
The Basics Suppositories will help those of you who suffer from menstrual discomfort and pain. It also provides local muscular relaxation and inflammation relief and can be used vaginally or rectally. Like the CBD tonic it is made with two ingredients, Organic-certified fair trade cocoa butter Sustainably-grown broad-spectrum hemp extract (110mg each).
I sometimes feel discomfort on the first day of my period and used it for my most recent menstrual cycle. The suppository provided me relief and allowed to go through my day without any discomfort. I am definitely going to recommend this to my friends who have pain during their menstrual cycle. I am looking forward to exploring how it can also be used to enhance pleasurable sensation by way of muscular relaxation.
Awaken Arousal Oil
Awaken arousal is an intimate massage oil made with broad-spectrum CBD and synergistic botanical & aromatic oils. The blend is formulated for women, to enhance sensation & pleasure while decreasing tension, discomfort, and dryness.
I have to admit this is one of the products I was most excited about. I am big on using natural lubrication and with the added benefit of enhanced arousal, I felt this could be a game-changer. So many women struggle with pleasure for a variety of reasons.
Vaginismus is a disorder where the muscles around the outer third of the vagina contract involuntarily when vaginal penetration is attempted during sexual intercourse. It can stem from a specific event, such as an infection, menopause, a traumatic event, development of a medical condition, relationship issues, surgery, or childbirth. It can make it painful, difficult, or impossible to have sexual intercourse, to undergo a gynecological exam, and to insert a tampon. With that being said, I personally feel Foria can be the solution for many women.
The Awaken arousal oil is a blend of Organic MCT Coconut Oil Whole-Plant Extracts, and Organic Essential Oils. It smells divine.
I used it during a personal one on one session. To use it you must massage it and allow some time for it to activate. Personally, once it was activated every touch was heightened and let's just say I can not wait to try it out with a partner.
If you struggle with pain during your menstrual cycle, have challenges with enjoying sex, as well as, struggle with stress, insomnia, or inflammation you definitely want to try these products out. Foria has created a line of products of all-natural products that have been independently lab tested for purity and have no additives, preservatives or THC.
I will update you in a few weeks with more of my personal journey. If you have used their products I would love to hear from you. Let me know what you think after you try the products for the first time.

I am really big advocate for womb wellness especially with period matters because of personal struggles due to my brain tumor (prolactinoma ) and Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (pcos). There was a time the only way I could have a period was by taking medication. But through lifestyle changes which included becoming vegan, and switching out my sanitary napkins I am able to have period every month without assistance. Thinx underwear is the perfect addition to my period kit.
They have a variety of styles that accommodate the variability in our flow and activity. You can see my favorite styles if you go to my personal page at http://shethinx.com/nzingah
Below you will find my announcement and showing what I use.
Note: By using my link you get $10 off your purchase and if you create an account free shipping.
Here are a few of their most recent releases:

]]>A couple weeks ago I led a Girl Trek Super Hero Saturday Trek in Little Haiti. It was part of weekend activation that Girl Trek was having in South Florida. We had an amazing time exploring the Little Haiti and some of the its known and hidden gems. In this case we started from the Little Haiti Cultural Complex, we made our way to Upper Buena Vista and back. I recently joined the Girl Trek family to host walks in South Florida and in Haiti.
So what is Girl Trek?
GirlTrek is the largest public nonprofit for African-American women and girls in the United States. They encourage women to use walking as a first step towards healthy living, wellness, and self-care. They encourage walking 30 minutes 5 times a week. In addition to local walks organized by volunteers they have national activations that rally women from all over the nation to collide and connect in one space. They recently had their second annual Stress Protest in Colorado.
Why African American women?
African-African women are disproportionately subject to a variety of diseases and illnesses.
Most of these things are preventable and reversible through diet and exercise. So the goal is to use walking as the starting point to address these disparities .
We’re about to TAKEOVER these streets for radical self-care! I’m stepping up with GirlTrek. I will be walking up a storm this spring! I’ll be using Harriet’s Handbook, a list of walks to save my own life! I am fired up and wondering if anyone wants to join me? We all need some accountability – you can walk here with me or be my virtual walking buddy. Comment below if you’re up for the challenge. Take the pledge and download your own handbook at GirlTrek.org. It’s free!
Here are few more shots from our SuperHero Saturday Walk. I look forward to you joining me on one sooner than later.

My mother was concerned and pressured my pediatrician to pursue it more and I was diagnosed with a pituitary tumor (prolactinoma)which lead to me being diagnosed with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).
Seventeen years ago, I was definitely on that journey; I was pre-med because I wanted to heal my mother and myself.
I am here seventeen years later a lot healthier, a lot wiser, with so many tools, techniques, & lessons under my built.

What's in your self-care toolkit? Many of my tools are inanimate. A lot of redirecting of unhealthy behaviors and creating boundaries. My tool-kit also includes physical items that help reduce my stress and set the mood for relaxation. What I use it based on what I need. Here are few items you will find in my toolkit and why I use them.
Essential Oils:
I use essential oils in several capacities-aromatherapy, baths, DIY skincare and cleaning products, as well as cooking.
The benefits vary based on what essential oil you choose. I will share the benefits of the three pictured.
Rose Essential Oil:
Rose absolute can relax and soothe stressed nerves, and is great for balancing mixed skin types. Diffuse a very small amount for relaxation, or apply in extremely small dilution.
Lavender Essential Oil:
Lavender is primarily sold for its relaxing abilities, but it is excellent for skin care as well. Diffuse, add a drop to a warm bath, or apply topically at 2-10% dilution.
Lemon Essential Oil:
Lemon oil is often used in cleaning agents, as it quickly and easily dissolves sticky residues and can clean away difficult grime. Topically, it can cleanse the skin. Aromatically, lemon has powerful uplifting properties. Diffuse, add to cleaning agents, apply directly to difficult-to-clean areas, or apply in 2-5% dilution
I have been obsessed with Nature's Fusions line of essential oils. They provide quality product at an amazing price. Check them out and tell me what you think.
Incense Sticks and Resins:
I use incense sticks as healthier option to spray air fresheners. I also use incense to help me get in the mood for meditation and yoga. I mainly use nag champa incense sticks. Sandalwood, one of the principle ingredients in Nag Champa, offers many aromatherapy benefits. It creates a calming effect, dispelling stress and thus opening access to deeper meditative states.
Resin is considered the original incense, as it comes from refined tree and plant sap and has been used all over the world for thousands of years. I personally love to use Frankincense and Myrrh. Both have been used since ancient times by civilizations in Africa and Mesopotamia.
Frankincense is one the most known substance when it comes to spiritual practice. It is also the famous incense from the bible thought to awaken a feeling of union with the divine. Frankincense has purifying and relaxing qualities and is thought to strengthen willpower, self-confidence and determination. Myrrh is often paired with frankincense is associated with spiritual awareness, meditation, prayer and well-being.
Smudging Sticks:
Smudge sticks are usually made with dried leaves and flowers that are known for their spiritual qualities. It is an ancient tool used in many native communities. My go to smudge stick is sage.
The use of sage is for healing. The smoke is used to bless, cleanse and heal the person or object being smudged. Sage is used to 'wash off' the outside world when one enters ceremony or other sacred space. Objects are likewise washed off with sage medicine smoke to rid them of unwanted influences.
Semi-Precious Stones and Crystal
Crystal healing is an “ancient metaphysical art” that can help bring balance and prosperity to your life through vibrations. Azalea Lee says, “The vibratory harmonics of individual crystals and stones are used to help calibrate the vibrations in an individuals psychic aura, much like a tuning fork can help one find the correct pitch.”
I love to use clear quartz and amethyst.
Clear Quartz is known as the "master healer" and will amplify energy and thought, as well as the effect of other crystals. It absorbs, stores, releases and regulates energy
Amethyst is a meditative and calming stone which works in the emotional, spiritual, and physical planes to promote calm, balance, and peace. It is also used to eliminate impatience.
Flowers:
As an artist I believe what you see impacts how you feel. If you see beauty it will possibly make you feel beautiful but it will definitely uplift your spirit. Flowers and plants are a great way to this and they have been used for centuries. I use flowers for aesthetic purposes as well as spiritual ones. There is a strong connection between flora and the spiritual realm. Keeping the right flowers close to you can increase divine connectedness. Explore each flower's unique power and meaning to see if they can enhance your spiritual life. I personal love making flowering baths for cleansing and grounding.
What are some of you must haves for your self-care toolkit?
]]>A few months ago I was asked to give some words of wisdom to young girl as an artist entrepreneur. It allowed me to really assess what I had learned and what would I tell my younger self if I had to do it all again. A few weeks later a received a package in the mail as to thank me for my time. I was pleasantly surprised by Saint Maxine Waters candle.
When someone knows the right gift to give you, and it arrives on the day of the new moon.
In many traditional cultures candles are charged and used for mediation and rituals. Many are devoted to certain Saints or dieties that represent different energies that you made need.
I was inspired by the gift to find seven quotes I could use as affirmations from Saint Maxine Waters. Maxine Waters has been in the limelight recently for her statements. She has been unapologetic about her truths. As I navigate finding my voice and speaking my truth, she is someone I admire.
Try these affirmations over the course of the next 7 days:
To make sure your goals are clear and reachable, each one should be:
Your goal should be clear and specific, otherwise you won't be able to focus your efforts or feel truly motivated to achieve it. When drafting your goal, try to answer the five "W" questions:
It's important to have measurable goals, so that you can track your progress and stay motivated. Assessing progress helps you to stay focused, meet your deadlines, and feel the excitement of getting closer to achieving your goal.
A measurable goal should address questions such as:
Your goal also needs to be realistic and attainable to be successful. In other words, it should stretch your abilities but still remain possible. When you set an achievable goal, you may be able to identify previously overlooked opportunities or resources that can bring you closer to it.
An achievable goal will usually answer questions such as:
Beware setting goals that someone else has power over. For example, "Get that promotion!" depends on who else applies, and on the recruiter's decision. But "Get the experience and training that I need to be considered for that promotion" is entirely down to you.
This step is about ensuring that your goal matters to you, and that it also aligns with other relevant goals. We all need support and assistance in achieving our goals, but it's important to retain control over them. So, make sure that your plans drive everyone forward, but that you're still responsible for achieving your own goal.
A relevant goal can answer "yes" to these questions:
Every goal needs a target date, so that you have a deadline to focus on and something to work toward. This part of the SMART goal criteria helps to prevent everyday tasks from taking priority over your longer-term goals.
A time-bound goal will usually answer these questions:
Here are some examples of my current smart goals:

Chronic constipation can lead to long list of health complications including cancer. Colon cancer is one of the most preventable forms of cancer and is associated with chronic constipation. In general, an individual should go just as as many times they eat (a big meal that is) which is normally 2-3 times a day. A way to determine if you are constipated is by the odor of your poop. When you are going to the bathroom on schedule your poop will smell like potpourri (no spray or warning to the next person who goes to the bathroom). This is the example I like to use: when you place items in the trash there is no odor however a few days later that is a different story. So if we look at our bodies the smell is an indication that the waste has sat in our bodies for a bit of time.

The summer solstice is said to mark the beginning of summer in some areas, while other parts of the world call it “midsummer.” The summer solstice usually falls between June 20 and June 22 in the Northern Hemisphere. In the Southern Hemisphere, the summer solstice occurs between December 20 and December 22
Like other seasonal changes the summer solstice is opportunity to let go of the old and make space for the new. The energy of the summer is one of expansion. You will want to focus on releasing things that keep you from being the greatest expression of your higher self. We want to focus on rituals that allow you to release past hurts.
Here are 3 rituals to help you tap into the energy of the solstice:
The beginning of summer represents a time for purification, renewal and healing of the self & soul, a time to release the sadness, fears and pains from your life. A time for purification and renewed energy.
In your journal reflect on the following questions and write down your responses.
What are you full of? What are you fertile with? What is in abundance to you currently? What can you harvest?
What is it that you need to let go? What hasn’t served you over the past few months? What direction do you want to go in the coming months and what do you need to shed to make the journey easier?
Create an affirmation(s) that you will recite daily for the next 21 days that align with what your journal.
During this time your heart physically and emotionally is opened for healing and. Do the following bath and meditation to bring more love into your life.

“I believe healing is a lifelong journey and the hardest part is starting.” Tarana Burke
Touch has been a source of terror, pleasure, and comfort. Consequently, I have always and continue to suppress (or struggle with) the anxiety that grows at the anticipation of an unfamiliar or familiar “touch”. I am never quite sure how my body will process the slightest engagement.
Individuals who have never experienced trauma can only offer theoretical prescriptives as to how to move past trauma. More specifically, when it comes to sexual trauma, the apparent social consensus echos; “You should just get over it.” Whether this solution comes from friends, family, and even our celebrated mental health professionals, the lack of sensitivity also echos the the underlying problems in our social interactions. The thing is, whether you are a dysfunctional or a well-adjusted victim, you discover “Getting Over It” is much more complicated than any outsider can imagine. The experience of sexual trauma is a permanent stain that victims eventually realize can not be washed away. No matter how hard you try to separate yourself from the event, there will be act or interaction that brings that horrible experience to the forefront, like a “touch”. Rather than running away, “coping” becomes the socially acceptable tool of choice.
It is my position that, cognitive dissonance as a scientific concept, best describes the act of “coping”. It requires navigating along a fine line of self judgement, guilt and the desire to be “normal”. Unfortunately, navigating this fine line inevitably thrusts the victim into a world full of conflicts and contradictions.
I want to be desired, however, I don’t, particularly because, I struggle with the work to dismiss the guilt I have unknowingly placed on my younger self for what happened to me. I long for that intimate touch, but I cringe at the possibility of what may occur. A difficult aspect of sexual trauma is the invisible landmines that are buried all over a victim’s physical and psychological being. Survivors are unaware of these “landmines” until they are triggered. These triggers can manifest themselves from the slightest touch, smell, sound or even a familiar story. I remember discovering my first landmine as a 19 year old after being grabbed inappropriately by a student I was tutoring. I immediately began punching my student as my survival instincts kicked in and the poor student did not stand a chance. It was at this time that that I realized that I needed to go to counseling.
Another aspect of these "landmines” is that even innocent or socially appropriate interactions can trigger a vivid memory of the traumatic event. To be clear, these memories often times are as intense as the actual experience with physiological reactions as if I was experiencing the trauma over and over again. For this and countless other reasons, it is important to have open dialogues with anyone you plan to be intimate with. Opening up was not something I was comfortable doing when I was younger. I completely avoided discussing my trauma out of fear of being considered crazy. However, the ability to be vulnerable with your significant other and knowing that the person you are involved with has the compassion and ability to assist in creating a safe space is crucial to developing a healthy intimate relationship. One of the most liberating conversations I had, was when I was able to tell my lover that I had a flashback during foreplay and I had difficulty processing it. Upon discussing the reason why I avoided him, we developed a space for our communication, understanding, and trust to grow.
Life after sexual assault is complicated and convoluted. Healing requires patience, and an open mind. This piece is the beginning of a series where I examine and share my experience to find a sense of peace and renewed self love. My hope is I can help bring light to those who are trying to heal and understanding to those who want to support someone in their healing.
Love and Light,
Nzingah
